Lastly, but most importantly, there are different grades of plywood mostly divided into two parts – MR (Moisture Resistant)(IS – 303) and BWP -Marine (IS-710) (Boiling Water Resistant). There may be some core gaps and overlapping involved and that’s okay since plywood in India is still largely a manual process but if there’re more than 2 -3 core gaps & overlapping, you should probably do the nailing test again. Have the seller cut a piece from a sample sheet (most good dealers already have cut sample sheets for display) to see if the core lines visible on the outside are also congruent inside. If it does, abort, if it doesn’t, it’s probably alright. If there’s too many core gaps and overlapping, I’d advise having the seller hammer a nail on the side to check if the core layers split on nailing. The core layers should be visible as straight lines without core gaps and much overlapping. Second, check the side profile of the ply, the edges. High bending means its either not well made or it has been manufactured in a place with very different moisture levels than the place you’re buying. There would be some bending involved specially in highly humid places but it’s mostly limited to only 12mm and below thickness plywood. Often they compromise on quality for cheap products without realizing the long term impact of purchasing substandard materials. They rarely get to understand and analyse the quality aspect of the plywood. Many consumers purchase plywood based on the recommendations of carpenters, workers, contractors or suppliers.
